Basic in Concrete Technology What is Concrete? Concrete Ingredients/Materials Engineering properties of concrete Blended Concrete What is Concrete? The word concrete comes from the Latin word "concretus". Which means compact or Hold Together. Now a days concrete is most common and necessary things in our life. It’s a composite material composed of aggregates bonded together with cement paste which hardens over time. The present consumption of concrete in the world is of the order of 33 billion tones every year. It’s an artificial stone made of sand, stone, water & cement. Most widely used construction materials – abundantly available raw materials History of Concrete ~3000 BC, Egyptians made Pyramid with gypsum mortars as a binding agent (mud mixed with straw to bind dried bricks) View Collection China also used the lime based cementitious materials when building the Great Wall (BC 220 ~ 206). View Collection 800 BC, Greeks and Cyprus used lime mortars which were much harder than later Roman mortars. View Collection ~300 BC to 400 AD, Romans uses mortars by mixing Volcanic ash and lime (Pozzolana cement) View Collection History of Concrete Concrete is composed mainly of cement (commonly Portland cement), aggregate, water, and chemical admixturesif necessary. Application of Concrete Bridges Structures Concrete Ingredients Mix proportions Two components Paste (cement and water) Aggregates (sand and rock) Paste = PC + Water Mortar = PC + Water + Fine aggregate Concrete = PC + Water + Coarse and Fine aggregates Comparing the Proportions Why do we use concrete?
